- Wash by hand or on a gentle cycle, cold (under 30 °C / 86 °F).
- Use distilled or reverse-osmosis water only — never tap or well water.

Why silver needs special care
Silver-fiber fabric loses shielding effectiveness through two mechanisms, and ordinary laundry triggers both.
Chemical degradation. Chlorine, fluorine, and sulfur compounds — all present in municipal tap water — react with exposed silver to form non-conductive compounds: silver chloride (AgCl), silver fluoride (AgF), and silver sulfide (Ag₂S). A single sulfide exposure can raise the fabric’s electrical resistivity by 1,104% in just 30 minutes. Higher resistivity means weaker shielding. This is why the water you wash in matters more than almost anything else.
Mechanical degradation. The base fibers swell when wet. The thin silver layer cannot stretch with them, so aggressive agitation creates micro-fractures that cause silver to flake away from the fiber. Cold water and a gentle cycle keep this to a minimum.
Step by step
- Fill a basin with distilled or reverse-osmosis water at room temperature or cooler (under 30 °C / 86 °F). Distilled and RO water are stripped of the chlorine, fluoride, and minerals that tarnish silver — this is a chemical necessity, not a preference.

A few more things worth knowing
About cotton underlayers. Most Spero items — leggings, beanies, caps, tank tops, the headband and neck gaiter, and gloves — are worn directly against the skin, so a cotton underlayer isn’t practical and isn’t needed. The one exception: if you wear a Spero hoodie for long stretches, a cotton undershirt underneath can help keep sweat off the silver, but it’s entirely optional.
Expect some first-wash shrinkage. Cotton-blend silver fabrics may shrink roughly 3–10% on the first wash depending on composition. Factor that in when choosing a size.
Wash less, not more. Because every wash is a small stress on the silver, wash only when a garment genuinely needs it. Air your garments out between wears and spot-clean when you can — it extends the life of the shielding.
